During the Civil War
-
In 1863, Harriet Tubman led soldiers with Colonel James Montgomery to raid rice plantations along the Combahee River in South Carolina. They set fire to buildings, destroyed bridges, and freed many of the slaves on the plantations. She led what were essentially armed guerrilla raids into enemy territory. That role prepared Tubman to be one of the world’s greatest spies in American intelligence history, during the Civil War, serving President Lincoln. |
Harriet Tubman became the first black woman in history to lead a military expedition. Harriet took a stand in history because she helped the Union Army win the Civil War. She was always risking her life for others, even if they probably didn’t deserve it.
